  14. What is the difference between an antihistamine and a glucocorticoid?

In the early phase of the allergic cascade, antihistamines like ZYRTEC® switch off the histamine receptor, and reduce the symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, itch, watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat. Intranasal glucocorticoids like RHINOCORT® down-regulate the recruitment and influx of inflammatory cells, and inhibit the secretion of pro-inflammatory cells—the mediators during the late phase of the inflammatory response. These intranasal glucocorticoids work to relieve symptoms of nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and itchy nose.1
